Students will provide a thorough analysis of the pilot episode of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Students will situate their analysis within the course concepts and topics we have covered to date in the course.

The paper should answer the following questions by using specific examples from the show:

How does this show represent various social identities and addresses various social issues including social oppression? Thinking specifically about gender, sexuality, race, and class, does this show challenge or reinforce stereotypes? (To answer this question students must identify what common stereotypes/ stereotypical representations of the social identities represented in the show are, so that they can address them directly.) What are the overt and covert messages of the show? How is this show feminist? Is the show’s feminism intersectional? Were there any jokes, lines of dialogues, scenes, etc… that you thought were particularly powerful or offensive or positive?

The paper should conclude with your assessment of whether this show is mostly a positive or negative contribution to a socially just society.
